WEBB T's FLEET: "Live at

ZANZIBAR BLUE"

(EAR-1047)

CD cover

One of Philadelphia's most prominent drummers, Webb Thomas leads his Webb T's Fleet through an incendiary program of five hard-bop classics (standards by Herbie Hancock, Cedar Walton, Horace Silver and Cedar Walton) plus an original tune all recorded "Live at Zanzibar Blue," showcasing fiery alto saxophonist Julian Pressley and guitarist Monnette Sudler.

Personnel: Drummer Webb Thomas leads an all-star quartet with guitarist Monnette Sudler, organist Kyle Koehler, and Julian Pressley on alto saxophone:
"Watermelon Man" / "Ugetsu" / "Love Vibrations" / "Why Not" / "Founding Fathers" / "This Here" / "Founding Fathers"

What the critics say:

"Thomas' extended drumset drives the band from start to finish. He propels with a constant stream of crisp, rudimentary drumstick thrills that matches the theme of each tune...The leader's consistency is key."
- Cadence

"Whether he is accompanying a visiting superstar or leading his own band. drummer Webb Thomas...makes music that is updated '60s organ soul resting on a hard-bop foundation. This hard-swinging collection veers toward a New Orleans second-line feel on Bobby Timmons' 'This Here' and features some muscular solo work from Julian Pressley on Horace Silver's 'Love Vibrations.'
Thomas manages to inject some heavy backbeat on 'Watermelon Man,' which has been worked over pretty heavily...guitarist Monnette Sudler's haunted, always-compelling lines are a bonus."
- Philadelphia Inquirer

"Mr. Thomas exudes experience, confidence, inherent rhythmic ease and skill and an aptitude to have a good time in front of an audience. That's a rare combination.
The interaction of the group is supreme. Webb T's Fleet's ability to interact with the audience as well becomes obvious on this CD...
For the joy of discovering new music and the joy that soulful jazz groups can deliver, discover Webb T's Fleet..."
